Areas of Expertise

He is a Research Fellow in Design and Public Space at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, and Senior Urban Designer with Sustrans on active travel and liveable places projects.

His expertise, in collaborative and socially responsive design in public realm, has brought-to-life people-centred, award-winning and cross-disciplinary projects for over two decades. He works extensively across public, private and third-sector projects: on social-safe neighbourhoods; inclusive active mobility; equitable, creative, playful public realm, and human-centred crime prevention through urban design.

Trained in urban design and public space (Barcelona); product design (London), and crime prevention through urban design and planning (Copenhagen), Marcus has delivered and advised-on design practice, placemaking and strategy, in the UK and internationally. His work is incorporated within the Government of South Australia Atlas of Urban Excellence, Mayor of London’s cultural strategy and permanent collection of MoMA, New York. He has published internationally, recently including for the Routledge Handbook of Placemaking.

In addition to advisory roles on active travel, design against crime, urban liveability and creative engagements, Marcus is an invited expert advisor for inclusive innovation in public toilets, with Helen Hamlyn Centre, RCA.
