Design Council is to run a day of activities focusing on design’s critical role in addressing the climate crisis, as part of the London Design Festival. The events, which will take place on Thursday 23 September, are part of the line-up for Planted Unearthed – the first contemporary design show reconnecting people and spaces with nature.

Design Council will be hosting three sessions, led by its Chief Executive, Minnie Moll, and Chief Design Officer, Cat Drew. They will be joined by environmental and landscape design experts from across the UK, who will share their vision and the approaches behind some of the most inspiring sustainable design projects in the UK today. The sessions aim to provoke conversation about design’s role in the climate crisis and give participants practical tools to implement change.

Each session has a different focus, allowing audiences to join all or access the event that best meets their interest and need.

Agenda

11-12pm: Design for a sustainable future

As more designers shift to a regenerative rather than degenerative approach to their practice, Design Council Chief Executive Minnie Moll and a panel of experts will share how they evolved their ways of working and why designing in harmony with nature should be the number one focus for all designers.

Joining Design Council Chief Executive, Minnie Moll:

  • Sue Illman, Illman Young

  • Dr. Mike Wells, Biodiversity by Design

1.30-2.30pm:  Making sustainable design a reality: learning from experience

From opportunity to approach to outcome, our panellists share their sustainable design stories, reflect on what they’ve learned, and highlight the value of designing for people and planet.

Hosted by Design Council Chief Executive, Minnie Moll, with:

  • David Roberts, Igloo

  • Jo Liang, Caulibox

3.30-4.30pm: Applying design to complex challenges: a Systemic Design Framework sprint

A practical workshop setting out the Design Council’s Systemic Design Framework and how it might be used. Led by Design Council Chief Design Officer, Cat Drew, and Design Council Expert Tayo Adebowale, this session includes a practical exercise to kick-start the framework’s use with clients.

This session will be followed by a guided tour of Planted.

Venue: Planted Unearthed live talks stage, Coal Drops Yard, Kings Cross, London N1C 4DQ
